Dr. Modra Murovska obtained her MD at the Riga Medical Institute/Medical Academy of Latvia, Faculty of Paediatrics, and her PhD at the All-Union Cancer Research Centre, USSR Academy of Medical Sciences in Moscow, Russia. She was visiting scientist (Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science fellowship holder) at the Kochi Medical School, at the National Cancer Centre Research Institute, and at the Institute of Atomic Diseases of Nagasaki University Medical School, Japan in 1986-1987 and in 1989-1990. In 1993-1994 she was Nordic Medical Council fellowship holder and visiting scientist at the Department of Virology, the National Veterinary Institute, Uppsala, Sweden; in 1998 guest researcher at the Department of Medical Sciences, Uppsala University (Scholarship of the Swedish Institute), in 2001 guest researcher at the Department of Hematology, University of Cambridge. She is currently Associate Professor of Riga Stradiņš University, full-time appointed as Director and Leading Researcher at the August Kirchenstein Institute of Microbiology and Virology, Riga Stradiņš University. Since 2012 she is Full Member of the Latvian Academy of Sciences. She has published more than 150 original papers, 6 review papers and one monograph; in 2000 she had got American Society for Microbiology Morrison Rogosa Award. She is principal investigator in numerous regional and international research projects. Her scientific interests are – virology, blood-borne viruses, persistent viral infections and their association with human pathologies, implication of viral infections in pathogenesis of chronic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, role of viral infections in cancer development.
